Hamilton County Health Department

  • Promotes wellness and protects the health and safety of residents by offering a range of personal, community, and environmental health programs.
  • Coordinates services with those offered by other community agencies to increase the types of health services available.
  • Evaluates the health and safety needs of the area, modifying and developing programs to meet the changing needs of local residents.

Basic programs available through HCHD include:

  • Communicable Disease:
    provides screening, immunizations, and case/contact follow-up to prevent and control communicable disease.
  • Disaster Preparedness:
    Working with the rest of the community in disaster and bioterrorism preparedness.
  • Child Health:
    Promotes successful growth and development of children through education and referrals to clinics such as Women, Infants and Children (WIC) for health screening and nutrition services.
  • Maternal Health and Family Planning:
    Provides education and health services to women of child-bearing age to foster positive pregnancy outcomes.
  • Chronic Disease:
    Identifies and refers people who may be at risk for developing a long-term illness such as heart disease, diabetes or cancer. Promotes healthier lifestyles for increased life expectancy.
  • Food Sanitation:
    Provides training, monitoring and follow-up services to assure that food is safe for human consumption.
  • Potable Water Supplies:
    Protects residents from illness and disease through the testing of private wells, semi-private and non-community water supplies, and by assuring that new systems are constructed properly.
  • Private Sewage Disposal:
    Protects the public from disease resulting from inadequately treated sewage through assuring that new private sewage systems are constructed properly.
  • Solid Waste:
    Promotes proper management and disposal of solid waste to control or eliminate disease transmission.
  • Nuisance Control:
    Prevents transmission of diseases caused by nuisance bird populations, insects and rodents by controlling their breeding grounds.
  • Administration:
    Provides staff for the local health department, including an administrator, nursing and environmental personnel, and other qualified individuals to assist in carrying out the programs.
